Mentee:  2012-2014 (career development, research, lab/field methods, course work)

I first met Priya as a teaching assistant for one of the most challenging courses of the undergraduate Earth and Planetary Science degree at the University of California, Santa Cruz. I remember this moment clearly because Priya lectured on a Geiger counter with a level of enthusiasm you might expect from an entire football cheerleading squad.

Priya made this difficult course comprehensible by implementing an unyielding persistence for success. This persistence defines everything she does. She went above and beyond what was required of any teaching assistant by organizing the course learning objectives, implementing constructive lectures, and designing invaluable course handouts.  Priya brought a level of well-earned confidence, passion, and attentiveness to the classroom that you won’t find just anywhere. There was NO surprise when she was awarded the “Teaching Assistant of the Year” award every year that I was an undergraduate at UCSC. Priya believed in the potential of all her students. Even though she had hundreds of students, she made a point to know everyone’s name and individual learning style.

It has been an honor to have Priya M. Ganguli as a mentor over the past few years. During this time, Priya has not only taught me meticulous lab protocols, chemistry concepts, and analytical skills…. she has taught me to believe in myself.
